DCMS spent 75% more on data scientists in 2021

Investments in data scientists by the UK’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) continue to increase rapidly.

The data, retrieved by the Parliament Street think tank, shows that DCMS has spent an estimated £20,606,100 on data scientist and data analyst roles between 2017 and 2021.

Niall Crosby, CEO of AG Grid, commented:

“Today’s digital world creates a lot of data, and the ability to process, understand, and make decisions based on...

Georgia State researchers design artificial vision device for microrobots

Camera Lens

Researchers at Georgia State University (GSU) have designed an ‘electric eye’ - an artificial vision device – for micro-sized robots.

Through using synthetic methods, the device mimics the biochemical processes that allow for vision in the natural world.

It improves on previous research in terms of colour recognition, a particularly challenging area due to the difficulty of downscaling colour sensing devices. Conventional colour sensors typically consume a large...

SAS: Finland leads in hyperautomation awareness, UK languishing

Research from analytics firm SAS has found that Finland appears to be leading in hyperautomation awareness while a number of large countries are falling behind.

Hyperautomation brings together AI, robotic process automation, and multiple business processes on a cloud platform to help organisations make better decisions more quickly.

“Organisations will require more IT and business process automation as they are forced to accelerate digital transformation plans in a...

MIT launches cross-disciplinary program to boost AI hardware innovation

MIT has launched a new academia and industry partnership called the AI Hardware Program that aims to boost research and development.

“A sharp focus on AI hardware manufacturing, research, and design is critical to meet the demands of the world’s evolving devices, architectures, and systems,” says Anantha Chandrakasan, dean of the MIT School of Engineering, and Vannevar Bush Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

“Knowledge-sharing between...

AI drug research algorithm flipped to invent 40,000 biochemical weapons

Toxic Molecules

We often hear about the benefits artificial intelligence (AI) can bring to medicine and healthcare through drug research, but could it also pose a threat?

Researchers from Collaborations Pharmaceuticals, a North Carolina-based drug discovery company, have published a paper that highlights the dangerous potential of AI and machine learning to discover biochemical weapons.

By simply tweaking a machine learning model called MegaSyn to reward instead of penalise predicted...

92% of product decision-makers say data and analytics is critical to success

A new study, “The Business Intelligence Landscape,” commissioned by Sisense and conducted by The Harris Poll among product decision-makers, highlights that companies offering data and analytics to their customers have a competitive advantage and reap the benefits of increased revenue and loyalty.

However, the report shows there are some challenges to overcome. For example, 53% of respondents wish their analytics experience was more aligned with user-friendly entertainment...

Meta claims its new AI supercomputer will set records

Meta (formerly Facebook) has unveiled an AI supercomputer that it claims will be the world’s fastest.

The supercomputer is called the AI Research SuperCluster (RSC) and is yet to be fully complete. However, Meta’s researchers have already begun using it for training large natural language processing (NLP) and computer vision models.

RSC is set to be fully built in mid-2022. Meta says that it will be the fastest in the...

AI bias harms over a third of businesses, 81% want more regulation

AI bias is already harming businesses and there’s significant appetite for more regulation to help counter the problem.

The findings come from the State of AI Bias report by DataRobot in collaboration with the World Economic Forum and global academic leaders. The report involved responses from over 350 organisations across industries.

Kay Firth-Butterfield, Head of AI and Machine Learning at the World Economic Forum, said:

“DataRobot’s research...

Oxford Union invites an AI to debate the ethics of its own existence

DNA Sequencing

The Oxford Union, the debating society of the University of Oxford, invited an artificial intelligence to debate the ethics surrounding its own existence earlier in December. The results? Troubling.

The AI in question was the Megatron Transformer, a supervised learning tool developed by the applied deep research team at NVIDIA, based on earlier work by Google.

Trained on real-world data, the Megatron has knowledge of the whole of Wikipedia, 63 million English news...

Data scientists’ pay could hit £100k in 2022 amid ‘white hot’ jobs market

According to a forecast by Randstad, the salaries of leading data scientists could hit £100,000 by April 2022 amid a “white hot” jobs market.

A large number of vacancies across many sectors of the jobs market are leading employers to offer higher salaries to attract and retain staff. With inflation expected to hit five percent next year, workers are simultaneously looking for pay increases to keep pace with the cost of living.

Adrian Smith, Senior Director of...
