OpenAI has announced DALL-E 3, the third iteration of its acclaimed text-to-image model.

DALL-E 3 promises significant enhancements over its predecessors and introduces seamless integration with ChatGPT.

One of the standout features of DALL-E 3 is its ability to better understand and interpret user intentions when confronted with detailed and lengthy prompts:

Even if a user struggles to articulate their vision precisely, ChatGPT can step in to assist in crafting comprehensive prompts.

DALL-E 3 has been engineered to excel in creating elements that its predecessors and other AI generators have historically struggled with, such as rendering intricate depictions of hands and incorporating text into images:

OpenAI has also implemented robust security measures, ensuring the AI system refrains from generating explicit or offensive content by identifying and ignoring certain keywords in prompts.

Beyond technical advancements, OpenAI has taken steps to mitigate potential legal issues.

While the current DALL-E version can mimic the styles of living artists, the forthcoming DALL-E 3 has been designed to decline requests to replicate their copyrighted works. Artists will also have the option to submit their original creations through a dedicated form on the OpenAI website, allowing them to request removal if necessary.

OpenAI’s rollout plan for DALL-E 3 involves an initial release to ChatGPT ‘Plus’ and ‘Enterprise’ customers next month. The enhanced image generator will then become available to OpenAI’s research labs and API customers in the upcoming fall season.

As OpenAI continues to push the boundaries of AI technology, DALL-E 3 represents a major step forward in text-to-image generation.

Art showcase platform ArtStation has provoked further backlash following its response to a protest over AI-generated images.

Recent advancements in AI-powered image generators like DALL-E, Stable Diffusion, and Midjourney have raised many societal, legal, and ethical questions.

The ability to rapidly create art with just a text prompt is a clear threat to artists that rely on commissions to make a living. In a double blow, art created by human creators is often used – without their permission and/or payment – to train AI models.

In recent months, AI-generated images have taken over the homepages of art communities like ArtStation:

Some creators want AI images banned entirely while others at least want to see original work prioritised.

ArtStation community members have been spamming their profiles with a “No to AI generated images” picture to get their point across:

The protest drew a response from Epic Games-owned ArtStation, but it didn’t go down well.

In a FAQ, the company reiterated that its content guidelines do not prohibit the use of AI in generating artwork. However, it says “works on your portfolio should be work that you created and we encourage you to be transparent in the process. Please only publish work that either you own or that you have permission to publish.”

That response won’t have done much to satisfy the artists who are unhappy about the presence of AI artwork on the platform, but there’s one part in particular that provoked further anger.

“We believe artists should be free to decide how their art is used, and simultaneously we don’t want to become a gatekeeper with site terms that stifle AI research and commercialization when it respects artists’ choices and copyright law,” wrote the company.

To that end, it says it plans on adding tags – at some point – for artists to disallow the use of their work for AI research. Uploaded artwork won’t be disallowed for AI training by default and instead will be governed by copyright law.

Epic says that it welcomes feedback on the topic, which it’s already getting plenty of:

Other tweets, some from high-profile artists working in gaming and film, include screenshots of them deleting their ArtStation accounts.

Shutterstock is expanding its partnership with OpenAI to advance how AI image generators are trained and how contributors are rewarded.

The stock image service will offer “direct access” to OpenAI’s DALL-E 2 image generator through its website.

“The mediums to express creativity are constantly evolving and expanding. We recognize that it is our great responsibility to embrace this evolution and to ensure that the generative technology that drives innovation is grounded in ethical practices,” said Paul Hennessy, CEO at Shutterstock.

“We have a long history of integrating AI into every part of our business. This expert-level competency makes Shutterstock the ideal partner to help our creative community navigate this new technology. And we’re committed to developing best practices and experiences to deliver on our purpose, which is to empower the world to create with confidence.”

OpenAI’s DALL-E 2 is one of the most popular image generators. To train DALL-E, OpenAI licensed data from Shutterstock.

“The data we licensed from Shutterstock was critical to the training of DALL-E,” said Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO.

“We’re excited for Shutterstock to offer DALL-E images to its customers as one of the first deployments through our API, and we look forward to future collaborations as artificial intelligence becomes an integral part of artists’ creative workflows.”

Shutterstock is creating frameworks that will compensate artists when their intellectual property is used and when their works have contributed to the development of AI models.

At its core, DALL-E uses a process called diffusion, which starts with a pattern of random dots and gradually alters that pattern towards an image when it recognises specific aspects of that image.

Put simply, users can input what they’re looking for and DALL-E 2 will generate an often very accurate image.

Due to concerns about the societal impact, including the generation of fake images for propaganda or hate purposes, OpenAI delayed making its tool publicly available until it was able to implement “a variety of mitigations aimed at preventing and mitigating related risks”.

Other popular AI generators – most notably, Midjourney and Stable Diffusion – beat OpenAI to public availability and surged in popularity.

DALL-E and Midjourney have fees when users exceed their free allocation, which serves to dissuade people from using them on any large scale for malicious purposes.

In contrast, Stable Diffusion is free and can be run on a local computer with under 10GB of VRAM. The result is that it’s become popular with communities that create explicit images of celebrities.

OpenAI says that more than 1.5 million users are now actively creating over two million images a day with DALL-E. Shutterstock says that it will launch its DALL-E integration in the coming months.

OpenAI has removed the waitlist for its DALL-E service and the text-to-image generator is now publicly available.

The original DALL-E debuted in January 2021 to much fanfare. In April this year, DALL-E 2 was released with significant improvements.

Interest around DALL-E has somewhat waned over the past year in favour of rivals such as Midjourney and Stable Diffusion.

While it’s subjective which model produces the best images, interest in DALL-E likely suffered from its long delay in becoming publicly available.

Midjourney entered public beta in July while Stable Diffusion was released in August under a permissive CreativeML Open RAIL-M license.

OpenAI was founded with the intent of promoting and developing AI in a way that benefits humanity as a whole. The company justifies the delay in making DALL-E public as working towards that goal.

“To ensure responsible use and a great experience, we’ll be sending invites gradually over time,” wrote OpenAI in an email to beta registrants in April.

Text-to-image generators have the potential to simplify the creation of convincing “deepfake” content that could be used for influence operations, fraud, generating hateful or pornographic images of people, and more.

OpenAI’s policies forbid such usage and the company says that DALL-E features “a variety of mitigations aimed at preventing and mitigating related risks”.

DALL-E and Midjourney have fees when users exceed their free allocation, which also serves to dissuade people from using them on any large scale for malicious purposes.

In contrast, Stable Diffusion is free and can be run on a local computer. The result is that it’s become popular with communities that create explicit images of celebrities.

OpenAI says that more than 1.5 million users are now actively creating over two million images a day with DALL-E. The company says that it’s currently testing an API for the service with several customers and “are excited to soon offer it more broadly to developers and businesses so they can build apps on this powerful system.”
